VATICAN CITY, JAN 4, 2002 (VIS) - The Holy Father appointed Bishop Paul Gregory Bootkoski, auxiliary of Newark, U.S.A., as bishop of Metuchen (area 3,688, population 1,267,442, Catholics 521,614, priests 251, permanent deacons 126, religious 461), U.S.A. He succeeds Bishop Vincent DePaul Breen whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same diocese the Holy Father accepted, in conformity with Canon 401, para. 2 of the Code of Canon Law.

- Philippe Capelle, president of the world conference of Catholic university institutions of philosophy.
- Archbishop John Patrick Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, accompanied by Bishop Pierfranco Pastore and Angelo Scelzo, respectively secretary and under-secretary of the same pontifical council.
